Chapel Hill’s Michelle Dorrance Taps on Top
“The first time I ever saw Michelle Dorracnce onstage was the fall of 1996, when she tap-danced onstage with Squirrel Nut Zippers at their album-release show at Cat’s Cradle. It was stunning all the way around, her dancing as well as their music — a perfect combination.
Little did we know that a scant six months later, the Zippers would blow up into huge superstars with an MTV hit and a million-selling album. And Dorrance, who was 16 back then, has likewise blossomed into one of the world’s most renowned tap dancers. She lives and mostly works in New York City nowadays, but Dorrance still gets back to the old hometown to perform and teach when she can. We caught up with her during her most recent visit for this profile from Sunday’s paper.” -David Menconi, NewsObserver.com
